What Happens If You're Stopped at a Bali Traffic Checkpoint

Traffic checkpoints are a routine part of riding in Bali, particularly on the busier connecting roads between tourist areas. Some locations are fixed and rarely move, while others rotate in and out during periodic safety campaigns. The road between Kuta and Ubud, the Kuta–Tuban bypass, Sunset Road in Seminyak, and the Ubud bypass near Sayan are all known for regular checks, generally concentrated in the late morning.
At a checkpoint, officers will typically ask for your licence and IDP, check that you and any passenger are wearing helmets, and confirm the bike's registration document (STNK) matches the plate. Having everything organised in one place — helmet on before you even see the checkpoint — makes the stop faster for everyone.
If you do receive a ticket, Indonesia uses a two-ticket system. A blue ticket means you're accepting the violation and paying the fine directly at a bank; a pink ticket means you're contesting it and the matter goes to court, which is a much longer process most visitors want to avoid. Officers will explain which one applies.
One point worth remembering: you should never hand over your passport as collateral during a traffic stop. This isn't standard procedure, even if it's sometimes requested. If asked, it's reasonable to politely decline and offer to follow the officer to the station instead. Staying calm, polite, and cooperative resolves the vast majority of stops quickly.
